Westmont College
Academic Technology Faculty Pilot Projects
iPads Recording Project
GOAL
The professor's stated goal was to explore how a simple workflow and software/hardware solution could benefit the course needs of Communication courses to enable peer review of recorded in class student speeches.
RESEARCH QUESTION
If an iPad is set up with basic recording software and a simple workflow for publishing video is created, how will this impact student peer review of in class speeches?
ACTION:
Software was loaded onto an iPad Air to allow users to record video and have it automatically streamed to a cloud server. The professor was given a basic demo and instructions to use the tools. Each time the recording was paused, a new video file was created. After class, AT staff logged into cloud server and sent the professor a list of links to the videos. The professor in turn sent the links to students to view and comment. The streaming nature of this set up allowed the professor and class to focus on the work they were doing rather than having to deal with a number of technical issues. The video files are archived on the cloud server for future access or assessment. The software used was MediaFusion and Wowza GoCoder.
EVALUATION:
The goal of this pilot was to find a technology solution that was less labor intensive for the professor and easier to use for the class. In both aspects, this technology solution succeeded. We were able to partner with this professor and group of students to leverage the technology in a way that it became transparent in their process while allowing them greater flexibility in their peer review.
