Westmont College
Academic Technology Faculty Pilot Project
LiveText - Academic Assessment tool
GOAL: Test a web based program that would enable efficient collection, analyzation and archiving of academic learning artifacts.
PURPOSE: To discover the benefits of a web based solution to academic artifact collection, analyzation to assist departments and the college in academic program review.
RESEARCH QUESTION: If the web based assessment tool, Live Text is set up for a group of courses to use, how would this impact the gathering, analyzing and reporting of academic artifacts?
ACTION: A group of courses was set up to use Live Text in the submission, analyzation/grading and reporting of selected student assignments. The departments involved in this project are History, English, Modern Languages, Education, Music and Theater Arts. Students in the courses in each department will submit selected assignments using Live Text. Professors and additional assessors will review the work and discover how collecting academic artifacts in this way can be a benefit to WASC program reviews.
EVALUATION: This web based assessment tool offers faculty and administrators a deep level of insight into a wide variety of learning efficiencies. Reports can be filtered to provide broad or acute views of academic mastery from macro to micro. Students have a clear view of the progress of their assessment and can see the rubric used. The system interface could use some updating as the look is a bit dated and some extra click through is required to navigate within this tool. Easy connection to LMS (Moodle and Canvas) make this easy for Faculty to connect students to the process. The user base will be expanded for the coming year to further discover the value of this product for the college.
